OK, probably not this one (see above), but it's always good for schools to be looking at new models for training and supporting today's musicians. Last year's Building a Community-based Residency pilot class is a good example of that kind of creative thinking at NEC.

Growing organically out of NEC's seven years of experience with the Sistema Fellows, I am now building a Center for Professional Development and Performing Arts Leadership. This new initiative is located within NEC's School of Continuing Education, and I'm grateful to Leslie Foley (Chief Strategy Officer & Dean) and Dan Schmunk (Director of Continuing Ed) for their support.

Why is this necessary?

After completing their musical training, the environment that awaits many NEC graduates—and their peers—has become increasingly complex. They are challenged to figure out how to create opportunities, build meaningful relationships to expand on those opportunities, and manage a diverse portfolio of activities—often including administrative roles—that add up to a sustainable career, artistically as well as financially.

In response to this challenge, the Center’s work is focused on 1. Guiding musicians to build and maintain successful and fulfilling careers, 2. Empowering musicians to make relevant contributions to society and 3. Ensuring that performing arts organizations will thrive thanks to future generations of leaders who are well prepared to address 21st Century challenges.

What's the plan?

The Center is currently in development. As details emerge, they will appear on NEC's website where you can email me to request information and updates.
