After years of resisting, I have decided to open a Twitter account in order to better document and share ideas--including my own--related to creative placemaking, artists in society, entrepreneurship, nonprofits, philanthropy, and sustainability. With the hashtag MusiciansAtWork, I have begun to point out examples of the normality of musicians making things happen beyond the walls (and the traditions) of institutions and outside of concert halls.
For me, this is about musicians taking initiative, bringing their artistry to people and communities. It's also about having new ideas, creating possibility and community, and building careers off (as well as on) the stage. What is it not about? You won't find any tweets about winning competitions, orchestra auditions, university professorships. Those stories are already deeply ingrained. At the risk of stirring up echoes of the recent election, where are the stories about the silent majority, the everyday working musicians who are creating their careers one day at a time? If you too have succombed to the "complexity-stunting brevity of social media," I invite you to contribute your own examples, using #MusiciansAtWork.
